A construction worker is in police custody following the death of an unemployed man, Roberto Grant, called “Kayan,” 20 years old, of La Parafaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
The Guyana Police Force in a statement said preliminary investigations revealed that the 41-year-old suspect of Grove, East Bank Essequibo, was at a shop located in La Parafaite Harmonie when an altercation ensued between him and the deceased.
During the confrontation, both men allegedly armed themselves with objects and inflicted injuries on each other.
The suspect subsequently went to the La Parafaite Harmonie Police Station and made a report. Police ranks visited the scene and later escorted the injured men to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Grant was admitted and later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
The incident occurred between 19:30hrs and 20:00hrs.
A broken piece of a glass bottle was recovered from the scene and lodged. CCTV cameras in the area were observed and are to be reviewed.
The suspect was treated for injuries at the hospital and remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.
The body of the deceased is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
