Jawalla Secondary School to be completed by September 2026

The new Jawalla Secondary School in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) is on course to open its doors for the September 2026 academic term, a release from the Ministry of Education stated.

The $231.9 million facility, currently under construction, is designed to accommodate 250 students and will primarily serve those transitioning from Primary Top. The project is expected to significantly improve learning conditions in Jawalla and surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, Minister of Education Sonia Parag inspected the ongoing works and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in recent months.

Minister Parag further noted that while some finishing touches remain, the improvements observed give confidence that the project can be completed ahead of the new school term.

“We are hoping that the facility is completed just before the opening of the new term in September 2026. I think the contractor may be able to do that because like I said, we’ve seen significant improvements in the last few months,” Parag stated.

The contract was awarded to Sheriff Construction Inc. following a competitive bidding process. Construction commenced in June 2024 and was initially scheduled for completion within eight months.

“It’s very important that we have students from the Primary Top come into this school and occupy this space. We want to remove the overcrowding that’s happening at schools right now; that’s one of the main reasons why we embarked on this project,” the education minister said.

The Ministry of Education will continue to closely monitor the project to ensure the school is delivered on schedule, strengthening educational opportunities for students in Region Seven.
