Legends Republic Cup football set for February 19-22

The inaugural Legends Republic Cup, scheduled to run from February 19-22, is combining high-level veteran football with a significant boost to the local hospitality sector, as numerous overseas players are in Guyana to compete.

Former international footballer Wesley ‘Butu’ Charles will be representing Pele Masters USA

Spearheaded by veteran footballer Paul D’Andrade in partnership with The Off-Road Experience (TORE), the competition will see 16 teams battle for supremacy across two age categories: Over-40 and Over-50.

The tournament has already attracted a high-profile line-up of participating teams, including Pele Masters (USA), Caricom Masters, Juice Xplosion and TNT X-Men.

Local powerhouses such as Guyana Defence Force Masters, Linden Masters and Thomas United Masters are also set to feature in the showdown at the Guyana Football Federation’s National Training Facility, Providence.

Beyond the nostalgia of seeing former greats back on the pitch, the tournament offers substantial financial incentives: the Over-40s will compete for US$3,000, and the Over-50s, US$2,500.

“This is more than just a kick-about,” one organiser noted.

“We are bringing together legends of the game to compete in a professional environment that also showcases Guyana as a premier destination for sporting events.”

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, TORE- The Off Road Experience, SuperBet, Omega Logistics, Lucozade and Banks DIH are the sponsors.
