Man shot dead during joint operation in Region Seven

Police in Regional Division #7 have launched an investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on Thursday during a joint service operation at Quartzstone Backdam, Region Seven.

The incident resulted in the death of Shemar Latif (age unknown), a resident of Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast.

According to police, the operation was carried out as part of efforts to apprehend a wanted fugitive and his alleged accomplices in connection with several serious offences committed within the division.

During the exercise, police ranks reportedly encountered Latif, who is suspected to be one of the accomplices linked to the wanted individual. Ranks attempted to engage the suspect; however, police said Latif, who was armed with a handgun, allegedly discharged several rounds at the officers while attempting to evade arrest.

Police ranks reportedly took evasive action and returned fire, during which Latif sustained injuries.

Following the shooting, a 9mm pistol, six live rounds of ammunition, and several 9mm spent shells were recovered at the scene.

Latif was subsequently escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

The suspect’s body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
