Ewart Baychu, also known as “Ewie,” a 19-year-old gold miner of Tapacuma Village, Essequibo Coast, has been charged with the murder of his employer, John José Marciano.
The murder was committed on February 7, 2026, at a mining camp located at 14 Miles Issano Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River.
Baychu appeared via Zoom at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir. He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until March 27, 2026.
Marciano, a 55-year-old gold miner of Wismar, Linden, was found dead on February 7 at the mining camp. According to Police Headquarters, his body was discovered around 03:45 hrs. He was found slouched on the ground within the camp with multiple chop wounds about his body. The murder weapon, a cutlass, was recovered near the scene.
Police also reported that a 35-year-old female cook from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara.
