A Corentyne man appeared before Justice Deborah Kumar-Chetty in the Berbice High Court and pleaded guilty to felonious wounding of his stepfather.
On July 16th, 2021, Mulshankar Sukharam, 32, of Number 79 Village, Corentyne, Corriverton Berbice attempted to murder his 58-year-old stepfather, Yughanray Suknaram, of Lot 24, Number 79 Village, Corentyne. Mulshankar pleaded not guilty to this charge but admitted guilt to wounding Suknaram with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Under Guyanese law, Mulshankar was entitled to a trial by jury on both charges. At trial, he would have been presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, he chose to waive this entitlement by pleading guilty.
Prosecutor Marisa Edwards presented evidence indicating that on the day in question, around 8:00 hours, Yughanray was at home when Mulshankar verbally assaulted him and hurled glass bottles, resulting in injuries. Mulshankar then fled the scene. While en route to the Springlands Police Station, Mulshankar was observed with broken glass bottles in his hands and subsequently stabbed Yughanray. He continued to pursue and repeatedly stabbed his victim in a neighbor’s yard.
Yughanray sustained two stab wounds to the abdomen and was rushed to Skeldon Public Hospital, then transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further treatment. After being discharged, he reported the incident to the Springlands Police Station.
On April 8th, 2022, Mulshankar was arrested after being informed of the allegations. During his arrest, he admitted to investigators that Yughanray tormented and pelted him with bottles.
Justice Kumar-Chetty acknowledged that there was a factual basis for Mulshankar’s guilty plea and accepted it for the charge of felonious wounding.
The court ordered that by March 2nd, a probation report, prison conduct report, aggravating and mitigating factors, a victim impact statement, and submissions from Mulshankar’s lawyer, Attorney-at-Law Sasha Roberts, and Prosecutor Edwards be submitted.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 12th, and Mulshankar was further remanded.
