Savita Singh makes history with Chutney Soca Monarch win

(Trinidad and Tobago Express) Savita Singh created history on Monday morning when she became the first woman to win the Chutney Soca Monarch title.

Singh performed her song, The Ring, and delivered a drone light show to the thousands who gathered at Skinner Park in San Fernando.

Rasika Dindial placed second with her hit chutney song, Pong D Damadol, in traditional style. Dindial, known as “D Rani,” also copped the Traditional Chutney title.

In third place was Lady Lava, who delivered her upbeat song, Cyah Pick, along with Ravi B.

Last year’s champion, Machel Montano, placed fourth.

Fourteen artistes competed for the title in the event, which began at 8 p.m. The audience was treated to a pre-show by several chutney singers.

KI Persad, who had been selected to compete in the finals, withdrew days before the competition due to health concerns.

On Sunday, he wrote: “It breaks my heart that I’m not able to compete in the CSM tonight anymore. We planned an out-of-this-world performance for you, including some of the most talented producers and designers in the region. I was definitely looking forward to competing against one of the best to ever do it and a hero of mine, Machel.”

KI said he was recovering and would return to the stage soon.
