A 71-year-old pensioner died on Monday following a river mishap at Kabakaburi, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo.
The deceased has been identified as Felix Smith of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.
According to Police Headquarters, Smith was the captain of a wooden boat that was involved in a collision with another vessel operated by a 36-year-old woman from Karawab Village.
Reports indicate that the woman’s boat was carrying two passengers, while Smith’s boat had one female occupant at the time of the mishap. Following the collision, Smith was found unconscious in his boat.
He was rushed to the Karawab Health Centre and later transferred to the Charity Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The female boat operator is currently in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations.
