The inaugural MODEC Tertiary Education Football tournament got underway at the Queen’s College Ground on Sunday, delivering 13 goals across two matches.
A total of 14 institutions are competing in the tournament, which serves as a platform for student/athletes to showcase their skills at the national level.
University of Guyana (UG) – Turkeyen Campus – side proved they were just as sharp with the ball at their feet.
Keron Spencer ignited the proceedings in the 10th minute, though a resilient Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) side held firm until the half-hour mark.
The floodgates eventually opened as Ronalhdo Sobers (32’) and Romeo Bradford (35’) struck in quick succession to make it 3-0 at the interval. Second-half goals from DeAndre Anderson and Jaleei Alcindor put the gloss on a dominant 5-0 display.
If the opening fixture was a clinic, the second was a demolition. The Government Technical Institute (GTI) dismantled Texila American University (TAU) 7-1 in a relentless attacking performance.
After a cagey opening 20 minutes, Akeem Smith broke the deadlock, sparking a collapse in the Texila ranks. By the time goalkeeper Emmanuel Lewis added his name to the scoresheet just after the break to make it 3-0, the result was a formality.
Despite a solitary consolation strike for Texila in the 81st minute, GTI remained ruthless, with Kevin David bagging the final goal of the night in the 89th minute to cap a seven-goal haul.
Matches moved to Berbice on Tuesday, while on Wednesday, the Linden Technical Institute looks to defend home turf against the Cyril Potter College of Education from 16:00h at the new Bayroc National Stadium.
