Vurlon Mills Football Academy Inc. (VMFA) and the dynamic InSync Therapeutics have collaborated for a “new standard, new vision and new era” for youth football in Guyana with the unveiling of the MVP Sports High-Performance Programme.
It is aimed at giving young Guyanese a genuine shot at a professional career by fusing modern science into their elementary training stage.
Mills, a vastly experienced former national footballer and founder of the academy, outlined that “talent alone is not enough and we always believe that talent is nurtured and developed within a structured, scientific and disciplined environment.”
The High-Performance Programme combines football training with sports science, athletic training, injury prevention, recovery and performance, monitoring to meet the requirements of modern football.

“In order to be the best, you have to prepare like the best or even better,” seasoned physiotherapist and founder of InSync Therapeutics, Neil Barry Jr., expressed on Tuesday as the two entities launched the programme.
“We bring cutting-edge technology, but also the best that sports science and sports medicine have to offer.”
He added, “You can imagine these athletes who are [currently] 11 and 12 [years old], in four to five years, with exposure from our inputs and to the best of cutting edge technology that is available to them, these athletes can be great and have not just a chance to compete at the local stage but do so globally.”
Barry Jr. further detailed that “at the highest stage everyone is talented, but where we often fall behind as Guyanese is without that scientific input that goes into training…but when we start plugging these gaps, we will see that the amazing talent we have will shine through at the elite level.”
Mills reflected that during his playing days, at age 16 to 17, he personally felt he did the hard yards to be supremely fit and compete at high intensity of 120 minutes locally, but when exposed to players who compete at higher levels of consistency, he saw his shortcomings on the field and the correlation to performance.
“We have the talent, we have the ability to play, but we always come short, as we don’t have the power to run for long periods, the agility to change directions at high speeds, and those are the things that will make us better than the next person.”
The Football Academy currently operates at the St. Stanislaus Ground on Carifesta Avenue, while InSync has a modern facility in Providence, East Bank Demerara.
