CPL confirms return to Jamaica in 2026 season

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will return to Jamaica in 2026, ending a seven-year absence of the tournament from one of cricket’s most storied outposts.

The move, confirmed on Monday, includes the reintroduction of a Jamaica-based franchise and a four-match schedule at the iconic Sabina Park.

CPL matches have not been staged in Jamaica since 2019, a period during which the island’s fans have frequently voiced their frustration at being left off the regional T20 map.

The breakthrough follows “productive and collaborative discussions” between the CPL and the Jamaican government, specifically the ministries of sport and tourism.

The return of a local franchise is arguably the most significant aspect of the announcement. Since the dissolution of the Jamaica Tallawahs—the two-time champions—Jamaican players have been scattered across other regional teams. The 2026 reboot is expected to provide a new pathway for local talent and restore the island’s identity within the league.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing the CPL back to Jamaica,” Pete Russell, the CPL’s chief executive, said. “Jamaica has a rich cricketing heritage and an unmistakable energy… The return of a Jamaican franchise and matches at Sabina Park is something fans have been calling for.”

The move is not just a sporting homecoming but a calculated commercial play. The CPL’s digital and broadcast viewership surpassed the one-billion mark for the second consecutive year in 2025, and the league is eager to utilise Jamaica’s global brand to further those numbers.

For the Jamaican government, the return represents a “renewed wave of energy” for Kingston’s urban tourism. Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, noted that the event “goes beyond cricket,” citing its impact on economic growth and international cultural promotion.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) president, Dr Kishore Shallow, welcomed the development, emphasising Sabina Park’s status as a pillar of the Caribbean game.

“The return of a franchise to Sabina Park is an important moment not only for the tournament but for cricket across the Caribbean,” Shallow said. “The island holds a special place in Caribbean cricket, having produced some of the finest players in our history.”
