Family devastated after motorcyclist dies in Corentyne accident

The family of 21-year-old Jagdeo Bhimsingh, who died in an accident on the Number 64 Public Road, Corentyne, on Monday afternoon has been left devastated and is demanding a thorough police investigation.

According to police reports, the accident occurred at approximately 13:00 hrs.

Jagdeo, an overseas-based Guyanese, was riding his motorcycle southward along the eastern lane of the public road when a motor vehicle, driven by a 60-year-old resident of Number 64 Village, allegedly turned east into his path.

Police stated that the collision occurred as the car was moving into a turning lane. The impact reportedly caused Jagdeo to be thrown from his motorcycle, landing on the grass parapet and sustaining severe injuries.

Public-spirited citizens rushed to his assistance and transported him to the Number 75 Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police conducted a breathalyzer test on the driver of the car, which registered alcohol readings of 7 and 8 micrograms, respectively. The driver was arrested and remains in police custody.

Meanwhile, Jagdeo’s father, Motie Bhimsingh, told the News Room that his son had returned from New York in January and had been staying with him at his home in Number 63 Village. He explained that Jagdeo was preparing to return to the United States at the end of February.

Overcome with grief, Motie said he had been helping his son prepare items to take back overseas.

The motorcar involved in the accident

On Sunday, Jagdeo was reportedly on his way to Corriverton to purchase gasoline for the motorcycle when tragedy struck.

“The footage my niece showed me, the man just swerved out and didn’t look back to see who was behind him. He just turned and knocked the boy. My son had nowhere to swerve; he didn’t have any space to escape,” the father said.

Family members further contended that Jagdeo was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash and was in possession of a valid United States driver’s license, along with all the required documents for the motorcycle.

“Me really need justice for my son; me can’t let somebody kill him just like that,” Motie pleaded.
