Ram, Suknanan and Sankar power West Dem to massive win; East Coast beat East Bank

A swashbuckling hundred from national youth all-rounder Parmeshwar Ram, a perfect supporting knock from Arvind Suknanan and a fine spell of bowling from leggie Navindra Sankar powered West Demerara to a commanding 173-run victory over Upper Demerara in Round Two of the Demerara Cricket Board’s Inter-Association Under-19 50-over tournament on Friday.

The match, played at the Meten-Meer-Zorg Ground, was reduced to 30 overs per side due to the late arrival of Upper Demerara players, who were delayed in the early morning rush-hour traffic on their way to the venue.

In the other second round game on Friday at the Police Ground, East Coast remained unbeaten with a thumping eight-wicket win over East Bank, who have now lost both their games.

Opting to bat first, West Demerara, who lost their opening game against East Coast, piled up an imposing 241 without loss with Ram and Suknanan stamping their authority on the Upper Demerara bowlers.

Left-hander Ram slammed an unbeaten 131 off 86 balls, an innings that included nine fours and seven sixes, while the right-handed Suknanan dropped anchor with 73 not out off 99 balls (9x4s).

While the duo had their communication issues while batting- on a few occasions offering a run out opportunity- they were relatively in control of their strokeplay and individual gameplan.

Ram was the aggressor from the onset, signaling his intent with a pair of sixes in the opening salvo, while Suknanan was content on playing the anchor role.

Off-spinner Shahid Ramzan emerged the most economical bowler amidst the onslaught, creating two opportunities that were floored, on his way to figures of 6-0-30-0, while leg-spinner Sameer Bhola impressed with 6-0-34-0.

In reply, West Demerara shot out Upper Demerara for 68 in 16.5 overs with Ram starting the rot, bowling Ramzan with a superb inswinging yorker- arguably the ball of the tournament thus far- and having fellow opener Alex Ragubeer caught in the circle to make it 15-2.

Thereafter, leg-spinner Sankar took charge, bagging 5-24 off 4.5 overs. Ram finished with 2-16 and Joshua Kushendyal 2-13.

Extras (16) topscored for Upper Demerara, while Russell Anderson made 11 and Ragubeer 10.
