Residents of the Four Miles to Seven Miles communities in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) now have better access to water following the commissioning of a new water treatment plant at Five Miles. This is the first surface water treatment plant in Guyana.
Bartica and the surrounding areas have experienced sustained growth in recent years, driving a higher demand for reliable access to treated, potable water. The construction of this modern treatment facility is a critical intervention for continued, sustainable growth and public health.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar expounded on the government’s investment into the treatment plant, and other spending in Region Seven.
“In Region Seven, from the time we took office in 2020 to the end of 2025, we spent in Region Seven alone, about $1.7 billion dollars to bring water to the people that are living in this region.
“We moved on to make sure that over 16, 000 people had access to water in this region. And with the coming to completion and the delivery of this plant to produce surface water to Four Miles straight up to Seven Miles, was another huge investment of $607 million dollars so that 6, 000 additional residents that [reside] in this community can have access to treated water,” he said.
The Minister added that additional surface water treatment plants are set to be built in other communities across Guyana, including Stewartville, La Bonne Intention, Diamond, and Hope.
“That will make sure that by 2028, we have one hundred percent treated water on the Coastline,” he told those gathered.
Delivering feature remarks was President Dr Irfaan Ali who further spoke extensively on investment being poured into development initiatives in Cuyuni-Mazaruni.
“Region Seven stands out as a model of impact. Between 2020 and 2025, hundreds of billions of dollars [were] invested in the people. We are seeing the difference; you are seeing the changes; you are seeing the improvement in the quality of your life. As we continue this journey of transformation, especially here in the water sector, we must remember it requires commitment, coordination and courage,” he noted.
The President also took the opportunity to speak on the new Ministry being led by Minister Indar.
“The ministry’s task is to find innovative ways through which we will be able to deliver at a [greater speed] and greater efficiency, the [new norm] for residents across the country,” the President said.
Also addressing the commissioning was Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI), Shaik Baksh.
“As we celebrate the commissioning of this plant, it demonstrates the continuing progress being made in providing both access to water and [safe and quality] water to the people across this country on the coastal belt and also in the hinterland communities,” Baksh said.
Baksh implored communities yet to receive treated water to exercise patience as the GWI and government work to expand access across the country.
