Unbeaten Berbice romp to U16 Inter-County title

A relentless campaign by Berbice culminated in silverware on Saturday as they dismantled Demerara at the Georgetown Cricket Club to crown themselves the inaugural Guyana Cricket Board Under-16 Inter-County 50-over champions.

Maintaining their unbeaten streak, Berbice utilised a disciplined bowling display and a fluid start to the chase to stay well ahead of the DLS par score when the rain eventually arrived.

Opting to bat first, Demerara struggled to find any rhythm against a Berbice attack that prioritised line and length.

Captain Lomar Seecharran fought a lonely battle, carving out 35 from 78 deliveries, but he found little sustained support at the other end.

While Ashton Collins provided a late cameo of 23 from just 20 balls, the clinical nature of Berbice’s bowling—led by off-spinner Ravindra Persaud’s 3-20 and left-arm spinner Jaden Ganpat’s incredibly miserly 2 for 11—ensured the target remained well within reach at 112.

Knowing that rain was a possibility, openers Luke Amsterdam (16) and Akash Ramdewar (19) laid a solid platform before Trevor Reynolds injected urgency into the innings. Reynolds’ 24 off 29 balls, including a towering six, ensured that Berbice were perpetually ahead of the clock.

When the clouds finally burst in the afternoon, the match was reduced to 30 overs.

However, Berbice had already plundered 109 for 5 and under the DLS calculation, their revised target for that stage of the game was a mere 72, leaving them victors by a massive 37-run margin.

Persaud was named Man of the Match for his game-changing spell.
