A shop owner from Rose Hall, Berbice, is grappling with trauma following a robbery carried out by three armed, masked men recently.
Shanie Ramsingh, the 69-year-old proprietor of Shanie’s Grocery and Off-Licence Liquor Store, located at lot 75 Reef Section, Rose Hall, Berbice, recounted the harrowing experience to reporters.
She recalled conversing with a customer about 21:00 hrs Monday when the men emerged from the back of her property. As they approached her, they locked eyes with her before moving towards a nearby yard where her nephew, Steven Ramsingh, lives. She said that after one of the bandits fired a shot into the air, she swiftly retreated into a section of her shop that was partially open and locked the door behind her.
Steven, 46, a security guard, was at home enjoying a meal when he heard a noise he likened to firecrackers. Moments later, he found himself held at gunpoint, with one of the robbers demanding money and jewelry. When he explained he possessed neither, the intruders weren’t satisfied and began to rummage through his belongings until they discovered some cash.
Steven noted that after finding the money, the bandits left his residence. Coincidentally, his cousin arrived in a black Fielder wagon at that moment, which the robbers then took as their getaway vehicle.
Steven also mentioned that the assailants appeared young, making it difficult for him to identify them.
The matter was reported to the Rose Hall Town Police Station, prompting an investigation.
Shanie revealed she remains deeply affected by the incident.
“I am so traumatised. Like unto now me is not myself. I went through it two times and like how I’m aging, I feel it although they didn’t get to do me anything. I imagine if they did manage to get me what would have happened,” she said.
Furthermore, Shanie voiced her concerns about the overgrown brush on an abandoned lot behind her shop, suggesting that such areas could serve as hiding spots for criminals. She urged the Rose Hall Town Municipality to assess the site and, if possible, clear the dense vegetation.
