Three masked bandits armed with firearms targeted the G. Sudhai and Son supermarket in Rose Hall Town on Saturday evening.
In an interview with reporters, Gurudat Sudhai, the owner, recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that around 19:05 hours, while he, his wife and staff assisted customers, the intruders entered the store brandishing two AK-47 rifles and a shotgun. He said the bandits demanded that everyone inside lay on the floor, with one of the assailants pointing a gun at him as he complied.
Sudhai stated that initially, the robbers tried to obtain cash by taking the cashier’s keys, but they struggled to open the drawer. According to Sudhai, they forcibly pulled his wife to open the cash register after which they managed to escape with an estimated $1.7M in daily sales via a back street.
Despite searching the belongings of the four customers present, Sudhai stated that the bandits did not steal anything from them. The entire ordeal was brief, lasting roughly four minutes.
Sudhai also noted that his son and daughter were in the family residence on the upper floor of the store during the incident.
“It was very scary. These men came with guns. My family is very traumatised, and we are very scared. Is like we don’t have any protection as a business. I really wish someone could look into this and get to the bottom of it,’’ the distraught businessman revealed.
According to Sudhai, the robbery was reported to the Rose Hall Town Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
Due to the level of competition among businesses in the Township, Sudhai expressed that he is currently unable to afford hiring a security guard.
Just a week prior, another robbery occurred when three armed individuals entered the yard of Shanie’s Grocery and Off-License Liquor Store, on Lot 75 Reef section, while it was closed. They robbed Steven Ramsingh of cash and made off with his cousin’s vehicle, a black fielder wagon.
