A man and an unidentified woman died early Thursday morning after the car they were travelling in crashed at the Mandela Roundabout, Georgetown.
Dead are Kenneth Johnson of ‘A’ Field, Liliendaal, Sophia – the driver of motor car PAL 2882 – and an unidentified woman who was seated in the front passenger seat.
A teenage occupant of the vehicle survived the crash and is currently hospitalized.
The News Room was informed that the accident occurred at about 01:50 hrs.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Kenneth was heading west along the northern drive lane of Aubrey Barker Road at a fast rate.
Upon approaching the Mandela Avenue Roundabout, Kenneth attempted to negotiate a left turn onto the Nelson Mandela Avenue to Eccles Inter-Link Road and lost control of his vehicle.
As a result, the car collided with a concrete median and turned turtle several times before coming to a stop. The vehicle was extensively damaged.
Police said Kenneth and the woman, who were seated in the front of the car, were flung from the vehicle during the crash and were later found lying unconscious along the roadway.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Medical Services and the Guyana Fire Service were summoned to the scene and the teenager who was trapped in the wreckage was extracted from the vehicle.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains hospitalised.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Police said CCTV footage from the area has been reviewed and an investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
