Fire rips through Haslington betting shop 

A fire of unknown origin ripped through a betting shop at Haslington, East Coast Demerara, on Monday.

According to a Police release, the fire started sometime around 05:30 hrs Monday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the operator, a 37-year-old woman, had secured the business on Sunday, at about 16:30hrs, and later retired to bed.

About 05:30hrs on Monday, she was alerted by a relative that the building was on fire. Upon checking, she observed the structure engulfed in flames.

The Guyana Fire Service was contacted and reportedly responded promptly, managing to extinguish the blaze and prevent the building from being completely destroyed. However, the interior of the building, along with several monitors and electronic equipment, was damaged by fire.

The value of the damaged items is yet to be ascertained.

Investigations are ongoing.
