Police in Regional Division 4 ‘B’ have launched an investigation into an alleged armed robbery that occurred Thursday evening along Providence Public Road, near the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
The incident, which took place at approximately 19:55 hrs and reportedly involved two Chinese nationals who reside in Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
According to preliminary reports, the victims were walking north along the eastern carriageway pavement en route to their home when they were approached by three identifiable მამაკales traveling on a motorcycle.
Police said one of the suspects, who was riding pillion, dismounted while armed with a handgun and confronted one of the victims. A scuffle reportedly ensued during which the suspect dealt the man a blow to the head, causing injuries, before robbing him of cash.
Simultaneously, another suspect dismounted and allegedly robbed the second victim of two cellular phones and a sum of cash.
A 23-year-old armed security officer who was in the vicinity reportedly witnessed the robbery in progress and discharged a round into the air in an attempt to intervene. In response, the suspects allegedly fired several shots in his direction before escaping south along the East Bank Access Road.
Emergency Medical Technicians were called to the scene, and the injured victim was transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he received medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that no gunshot injuries were reported.
Investigators recovered four 9mm spent shells at the scene, which have since been lodged for forensic examination.
Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
