Bail denied as truck driver remanded over fatal Williamsburg accident

A truck driver was remanded on Tuesday after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Alexei Anthony De Lima, aged 27, of Covent Garden East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Albion Magistrates’ Court.

The court was informed that on Sunday, April 12, 2026, while operating motor lorry GVV 5043 on Williamsburg Public Road, De Lima drove in a manner deemed dangerous to the public, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Haresh Gopilall.

Additionally, De Lima was charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

De Lima did not enter a plea to the charges.

Police Corporal Leon Jones told the court that the case file was incomplete.

Prosecutor Jones objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offense and the involvement of two individuals, one deceased and the other still hospitalized.

Mohamed Ali, representing De Lima, submitted a bail application, asserting that his client was not a flight risk. He argued that if granted reasonable bail, De Lima would attend court and cooperate with the trial proceedings.

Magistrate Matthias considered the prosecution’s arguments and denied bail. Consequently, she ordered that De Lima be remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to May 19 for further proceedings.

Police said around 21:00 hours, motor lorry GVV 5043, owned by an engineering company in Timehri and operated by a 27-year-old man from Covent Garden, was traveling east along the northern drive lane at a normal speed. Meanwhile, Gopilall, riding motorcycle CR 1603 with Yedesh Singh, aged 27, from Fryish Village, was traveling in the opposite direction at high speed. The police said the lorry driver suddenly turned right into the motorcycle’s path, causing a collision on the southern lane.

The impact threw both Gopilall and Singh off the motorcycle, injuring them. Gopilall was taken to Port Mourant Public Hospital, pronounced dead, while Singh, with a fractured jaw and clavicle, was stabilized at New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

On Monday, the results of a postmortem examination revealed that Gopilall had succumbed to multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle crash.

The lorry driver was tested for alcohol, with readings of 31 and 32 micrograms. He was subsequently arrested then charged.
