On Tuesday morning, a devastating fire reduced a family’s home to ashes, leaving two individuals without shelter.
Nadine Pluck, 46, of Lot 159, Number 8 Village West Coast of Berbice, recounted her distress, explaining that she had lived in the lower flat of the wooden house for nearly 40 years, while her brother occupied the upper flat.
Nadine, a janitor at Blairmont Sugar Estate, said she had left for work around 6:00 hours, securing her house before heading out. Her routine was shattered at approximately 12:35 hours, when a neighbor’s call informed her that her home was ablaze.
Rushing to the scene, Nadine arrived to find her entire home already destroyed. The fire reportedly started from the upper flat, and firefighters from the Guyana Fire Service Region Five responded swiftly.

Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald explained that the blaze was caused by a kerosene stove, leading to the house’s destruction.
Nadine reflected on her loss, stating, “Everything I needed was in that house.”
Despite the tragedy, Nadine remains resilient. She engages in poultry farming as a second income, with her chickens safe and unharmed.
“I had a 120 pounds in the freezer which I does distribute to local market, all was destroyed. When I come everything cooked, I have nothing,” she stated.
Looking ahead, Nadine plans to find shelter and rebuild her life.
“If anyone interested in helping me, they could contact me on my cell phone number: 619 8299,” Nadine revealed.
