Four-Day: Smith (5-36), Nandu (54) put Harpy Eagles in control against Volcanoes

Fast bowler Nial Smith, with his sixth five-wicket haul in First-Class cricket, and opener Matthew Nandu’s second consecutive half-century put Guyana Harpy Eagles in control at stumps on Day One of their second round match against the Windward Islands Volcanoes in the West Indies Four-Day Championship.

When the bails were lifted at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John’s on Sunday, Harpy Eagles had reached a solid 130-2, trailing Volcanoes’ first inning score of 151 by just 21 runs.

Electing to bowl first, Harpy Eagles gained immediate success with the new-ball pair of Smith and Keemo Paul leading Volcanoes in tatters at 21-5 in eight overs of mayhem.

Volcanoes were in danger of being dismissed for an embarrassingly low score, but the lower-order held firm to key the Harpy Eagles bowlers at bay.

Smith impressed with 5-36 off 13 overs, while Paul bagged 2-46 off nine and the returning Shamar Joseph 2-52 off 10.

For Volcanoes, Ryan John topscored with 37, Noelle Leo made 36 and first-round centurion Sunil Ambris scored 35.

The left-handed Nandu followed up his dogged 58 in the second innings of the last game with a much more free flowing 54 off 65, hitting eight fours and a six.

Kevlon Anderson made 41 off 50 (7x4s), while opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul is not out on 29 off 129 balls (1×4) alongside skipper Tevin Imlach on four.

Off-spinner Kenneth Dember has picked up 2-34.
