A Guyanese airline is seeking to establish a new air link connecting Georgetown, Paramaribo and Cayenne, a move French Ambassador to Guyana Olivier Plançon says is part of broader efforts to strengthen ties with French Guiana.
In a recent interview, Plançon confirmed that discussions are ongoing and that a local company is already moving to make the route a reality.
“There is a Guyanese company that is now applying to operate a new connection between Georgetown, Paramaribo and Cayenne,” the ambassador said.
Currently, travel between Guyana and French Guiana remains complicated, often requiring multiple stops and lengthy transit times despite the countries being geographic neighbours. The proposed route would create a direct corridor linking the three Guianas – Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
Plançon underscored that poor connectivity remains one of the biggest barriers to deeper regional integration.
“We all know that one of the main obstacles in the Caribbean is internal connectivity,” he said. “Those are issues we have to work on.”
The ambassador stressed that French Guiana is an integral part of the Caribbean and South American space, and closer links with Guyana are a priority for France.
“French Guiana is also part of the Caribbean region,” Plançon said, noting that the territory’s proximity, just about 800 kilometres from Guyana, makes improved transport links both logical and necessary.
If approved, the new route is expected to open up a range of opportunities for Guyanese.
Improved access to Cayenne could facilitate trade, expand tourism options and allow easier movement for workers and businesses operating across borders.
It would also provide Guyanese with more direct access to French Guiana’s connections to Europe and the wider French network.
