FOUR-DAY: Harpy Eagles claim slender advantage after absorbing day two

The defending champions and table-leading Guyana Harpy Eagles hold a 63-run lead over the Windward Islands Volcanoes after a seesawing second day at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

With the match effectively a second-innings shootout, the Harpy Eagles reached the close of play at 44 for 2, having navigated a tricky late session.

While the lead remains modest, the psychological edge belongs to Guyana after they secured a 19-run first-innings lead, capitalising on a dramatic Volcanoes collapse that saw their final five wickets fall for just 20 runs.

The morning session suggested a much loftier total for the Windward Islands.

Resuming on 22 for 1, Stephan Pascal and Kavem Hodge appeared untroubled, stitching together a 93-run partnership that blunted the Harpy Eagles’ vaunted pace attack.

Even after Gudakesh Motie broke the stand by removing Pascal for 43, the Volcanoes looked comfortable at 140 for 2, with Hodge anchoring the innings with a fluent 74.

The momentum shifted violently following the dismissal of Johann Jeremiah. Hodge soon followed his teammate back to the pavilion, and Shadrack Descarte fell shortly after as the score slumped to 177 for 5. Alick Athanaze provided the only late resistance, compiling a gritty, unbeaten 50 off 83 balls.

However, Athanaze ran out of partners as the lower order crumbled against the guile of Motie and the hostility of Nial Smith and Shamar Joseph. Motie finished with standout figures of 4 for 53, ensuring the Eagles stayed in the driver’s seat.y

Armed with a 19-run lead, the Harpy Eagles’ second innings began on shaky ground. Ryan John and Gilon Tyson struck early to remove Matthew Nandu and Kevlon Anderson, leaving the leaders vulnerable.

However, the experience of Tagenarine Chanderpaul and the composure of captain Tevin Imlach prevented a total collapse as the pair survived a probing spell to see their side through to stumps without further loss.

Chanderpaul, who top-scored with 69 in the first innings, remains the key figure for Day 3 as Guyana looks to set a target beyond the reach of a volatile Volcanoes batting lineup. (Modified from CMC)
