More than 15,900 pupils across Guyana began writing the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in their academic journey.
A total of 15,935 candidates have been registered to sit this year’s examinations, which are being held on Wednesday and Thursday. This year’s figure represents one of the largest groups in recent years, continuing a trend of high participation.
Education Minister Sonia Parag visited the New Diamond Grove Primary School, where 156 pupils are writing the examinations. She encouraged them to do their best.
“You have the knowledge and you are just going to read your questions and apply that knowledge, it’s nothing for you to panic about, just give your best effort,” Minister Parag told the pupils.
In 2025, 15,784 pupils wrote the NGSA, the highest number since the COVID-19 pandemic. That cohort also recorded Guyana’s best overall NGSA performance.
The minister said some of the schools had virtual classes and some tents were set up to provide extra support for studying. She also said that targeted interventions were introduced to better equip students. Additionally, broader interventions are also underway with more emphasis on getting students comfortable with sitting exams and learning.
“It brought students from various schools together and they were taught by different teachers in different topic areas so that they would be able to strengthen their knowledge and prepare them better for these exams,” she said.
Minister Parag expressed optimism about both academic outcomes and overall child development.
“I am looking forward to better results, of course, and I’m also looking holistically at our children developing in a wholesome way, not only in academics,” the minister said.
She also encouraged them to remain focused and know that the Government of Guyana is committed to ensuring their education is prioritised and strengthened.
