Rosignol man sentenced to 18 in jail for raping girl

A welder from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a girl.

Robert Campbell, 37, appeared before Justice Simone Morris at the Berbice High Court.

The charges state that on April 30, 2020, Campbell committed a sexual act against a 12-year-old girl in Berbice. He pleaded not guilty, but the jury found him guilty after a trial.

State Prosecutor Marisa Edwards called eight witnesses, including a police officer and a medical expert, to testify.

In her impact statement, the victim explained how her life has changed dramatically, as she now deals with trust issues and emotional trauma.

Justice Morris sentenced Campbell to 18 years, with the possibility of parole after serving at least 15 years.
