Habitat degradation, illegal mining and mercury pollution affecting Guyana’s Giant River Otter

Conservationists, researchers, government representatives, students and environmental stakeholders have raised concerns over the growing threats facing Guyana’s Giant River Otter, particularly habitat degradation, illegal gold mining and mercury pollution.

The concerns were highlighted during a panel discussion hosted by the EMC Foundation in collaboration with the Protected Areas Trust (PAT) in observance of World Otter Day on May 29. Held at The Avenue Café as part of the monthly Conservation Conversations Initiative, the event focused on the challenges affecting the endangered species and the urgent need for stronger conservation measures.

Founder of the EMC Foundation and Chairman of PAT, Shyam Nokta, said the initiative provides an important platform for conservation stakeholders to strengthen partnerships, share knowledge and promote practical action to protect Guyana’s natural environment.

Panellists noted that Guyana remains one of the few strongholds for the Giant River Otter due to its vast forests, wetlands and river systems. However, they warned that increasing human activities are placing significant pressure on the species and its habitat.

Discussions highlighted how habitat destruction, illegal mining operations and mercury contamination of waterways are threatening freshwater ecosystems that are critical to the survival of the Giant River Otter. As a top predator, the species plays an important ecological role and serves as an indicator of healthy freshwater environments.

Participants stressed the need for stronger monitoring, enforcement, scientific research and community engagement to address these threats and ensure the long-term survival of the species.

Stakeholders also highlighted ongoing conservation programmes aimed at improving knowledge of Giant River Otter populations and strengthening protection efforts across Guyana. Organisers said the event reinforced a shared commitment among conservation partners to safeguard the species and preserve the freshwater ecosystems on which it depends.
