Electrician remanded for rape of girl

An electrician was remanded to prison on Tuesday after facing a charge of raping a minor.

Calvin McDonald, 56, from Luot 237 Onderneeming, West Coast Berbice, appeared in front of Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on May 29th, 2026, in Region Five, McDonald engaged in sexual penetration with a girl under 16 years old.

McDonald was not asked to enter a plea for the charge.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Garfield Edwards, opposed bail, stating there are concerns that McDonald might try to leave Guyana if released. The prosecutor mentioned that McDonald is considered a potential flight risk.

Prosecutor Edwards emphasized the severity of the crime and pointed out that if found guilty, the consequences would be serious. He added that McDonald is an adult while the victim is a child.

Edwards expressed that granting bail at this point could lead to witness tampering by the accused. He mentioned a video that shows McDonald entering the victim’s home.

Edwards confirmed that the case file is complete and the prosecution is ready to move forward.

McDonald’s attorney, Sasha Roberts, informed the court that her client had been severely beaten and suffered injuries all over his body. Roberts argued that her client does not intend to flee and is willing to hand over his passport if bail is granted; he is prepared to follow any reporting requirements.

Magistrate Matthias considered the gravity of the crime, the safety of the victim, and McDonald’s status as a flight risk, ultimately denying bail.

McDonald was remanded to prison and is set to appear in court again on June 9th.
