A 24-year-old mason accused of killing his mother at their Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara home has been formally charged with murder and remanded to prison.
Greedesh Ramkissoon of Lot 80 Cornelia Ida, Block ‘Y’, appeared before Magistrate Rabindra Singh at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was charged with the murder of his mother, 55-year-old Surujdai Kahrui, also known as “Sharda.”
The charge alleges that Ramkissoon murdered Kahrui on May 28, 2026, at their residence.
Because the offence is indictable, the charge was read to him and he was not required to enter a plea. He was subsequently remanded to prison and is scheduled to return to court on August 7, 2026.
Ramkissoon was arrested on May 29, one day after the woman’s body was discovered inside the family home.
Police had reported that Kahrui, a supervisor, lived at the residence with her two sons. Investigators said one of the sons returned home sometime between 4:25pm and 10:40pm on May 28 and found his mother motionless inside the house.
The discovery prompted an immediate police response. During the initial investigation, ranks observed what they described as marks of violence on the woman’s body, raising suspicions of foul play.
Police said Ramkissoon, who also resided at the home and worked as a construction worker, had reportedly been seen at the residence around the time of the incident. He was subsequently taken into custody as investigations intensified.
The woman’s body was later removed to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination was conducted as part of the investigation.
Investigators had also indicated that footage from CCTV cameras in the area would form part of the probe.
With the murder charge now laid, the matter will continue before the courts while police complete their investigations.
