‘It is a process, but no compromise’- Coach Crandon on Jaguars’ fitness struggles
Guyana Amazon Jaguars players go through their paces at a recent training session

Crandon highlighted Sri Lanka Cricket’s policy, which takes effect this year. If players do not complete a 2k run within eight minutes, 10 seconds, the Sri Lankan board will also deduct fines from the salaries.

For Cricket West Indies, generally, failing to meet a minimum of 40 on the Yo-Yo test results in non-selection and at the regional level, players are fined.

Currently, there is a recommendation by the local Chairman of Selectors, Ramanresh Sarwan to the Guyana Cricket Board to increase the minimum mark to 45 on the Yo-Yo test.

The idea is to raise the Guyanese fitness levels and also allow them to have a “cushion” when it comes to international selection.

Several young Guyanese players have been overlooked for West Indies selection after creditable performances at regional tournaments due to fitness issues.

Recently, West Indies Men’s Head Coach, Phil Simmons, bemoaned Shimron Hetmyer’s continued issues with fitness after yet again, he was left out of a squad owing to a failed fitness test.

According to Simmons, the 25-year-old Hetmyer is not only letting himself down, but his teammates.

Meanwhile, Jaguars are now in preparation mode for this year’s Regional Four-Day Championship, which is limited to five rounds and is expected to start in February.

The first of three Best-of-the-Best Four-Day matches starts on Wednesday at the Albion Community Centre ground.
