Boyfriend charged with murder of young teacher

Joel Spooner, a ‘slinger banksman’ appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court where he was not required to plea to the charge. He was remanded to prison until May, 17, 2022.

Walks was the mother of a baby boy and a teacher at the St. Ambrose Primary School in Linden. She was discovered with a knife stuck in her neck at Spooner’s Craig house on April 13.

Relatives told the News Room that she had suffered months of abuse and was trying to leave the relationship.

The couple had only been together for a couple of months.

Police Headquarters reported that the boyfriend claimed that he tried to take the knife away from Walks during an argument, but ended up stabbing her.

Police suspect that she was killed sometime between 15:30hrs on April 12 and 11:45hrs on April 13.

Spooner had allegedly confessed to the gruesome act and claims that he tried to take the knife away from Walks during an argument but ended up stabbing her.

After he realised what had happened, he became scared, locked the house and left.

He later contacted his brother and told him what transpired; the brother and an aunt then took the young man to the Grove Police Station.
