An accident at the Junction of Heroes Highway and Diamond Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Tuesday night claimed the lives of two people – three-year-old Emily Persaud and 50-year-old Bagot Singh, both of Providence Housing Scheme, EBD.
The concrete piles that the driver crashed into
Police Headquarters revealed that four others are hospitalised with injuries; they have been identified as Daniel Gomes, a 21-year-old (the driver); Britney Hendricks, 23; Ellie Persaud, 2 and Tresha Singh.
According to the Police report, Gomes was speeding along the eastern carriageway of the Heroes Highway when he missed the ‘diversion’ and crashed into some concrete piles lying on the side of the Diamond Main Access Road.
The accident occurred at about 18:10 hrs. Police said reflectors and road markings were lawfully placed for vehicles to turn West (right) into Diamond Main Access Road only but Gomes failed to make the turn.
Three of the occupants – Emily Persaud, Ellie Persaud and Tresha Singh – who were all seated in the back seat of the car, were removed from the vehicle by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. Emily Persaud died while receiving medical treatment and the other two occupants were admitted for observation.
The Ambulance Services arrived shortly after at the scene with a team of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who checked and examined the driver along with the two other occupants, after which they were taken to the Diamond Hospital.
Bagot Singh was pronounced dead and the driver was admitted as a patient. Britney Hendricks was referred to the GPHC where she admitted as a patient in the Critical Bay.
