Mega transformers for Gas to Energy Project arrive at GYSBI/Muneshwers facilities

See below full statement from the Guyana Shore Base Inc (GYSBI):

Sixteen (16) mega transformers, slated to play an integral part in supporting the Gas to Energy Project, arrived in Guyana aboard the BBC Echo vessel, which successfully berthed at the Muneshwers Shipping Terminal before heading to the Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) Houston Facility.

The arrival of these transformers marks a significant milestone in the project, representing one of the country’s greatest investments to date.

Of this amount, seven were offloaded at GYSBI for LINDSAYCA CH4, a company which was hired by the Government of Guyana for the construction of an integrated Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) extraction plant and the establishment of a 300MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant.

The other nine of these transformers were discharged at Muneshwers Limited for Indian company, Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), that won the contract for the Provision of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Services for the project.

KPIL will oversee the installation of transmission lines and substations for the integrated NGL Plant and 300 MW CCGT Power Plant at Wales.

Two of the transformers offloaded at Muneshwers Limited weighed in at 241 metric tons each, representing the heaviest cargo ever handled in Guyana.

“Once the transformers and supporting equipment were offloaded at Muneshwers, we were able to berth at GYSBI and take off the seven for LINDSAYCA CH4, put them directly on to trucks where they were strap lashed and secured and moved 2000 metres away to the GYSBI Industrial Site at McDoom. They will remain there in transit to the project site at Wales,” Business Development Manager at GYSBI, Greg Biddle said.

Aside from facilitating the offloading and storage of the transformers, GYSBI has also been playing a significant role in managing all the required pipes for the gas pipeline, which is being run from offshore to onshore.

The pipes begun arriving at GYSBI in mid to late 2023, with the distribution campaign for this project concluding in the late first quarter of 2024.

In terms of volume, 8,544 joints were received, 8,461 joints were dispatched on to Project Support Vessels (PSVs), 1,410 transfers took place from GYSBI’s Annex to its Main Base using road trucks and trailers, 30 pipe load outs were done on to Project Support Vessels (PSVs) and 120 CCU Units of Project Support Equipment were managed.

GYSBI has also been supporting LINDSAYCA CH4 in the execution of Earth, Soil Remediation and Surcharge works at the project site.

Prior to this engagement with LINDSAYCA CH4, GYSBI was contracted by ExxonMobil Guyana to execute the Early Civil Works at the location. This included the construction of five bridges, 4,800 metres of road including an access road and a heavy haul road, and the initial site preparation for the Integrated Plant Site.

The project is managed by 260 staff members, 96 percent of whom are Guyanese and are directly employed with GYSBI. With the inclusion of third-party contractors and service providers, the site sees more than 400 persons every day.

The Gas-to-Energy Project is expected to majorly enhance the country’s energy capacity, supporting economic growth and sustainability. The government’s dedication to completing this gas-to-shore project is expected to reduce energy costs for citizens of Guyana by 50 percent.
