As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and engagement with Guyana’s border communities, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, recently visited the remote village of Kaikan, located along the Wenamu River in the Upper Mazaruni.
The village, situated at a strategic point near Guyana’s western frontier, plays a critical role in the country’s defence framework. Brigadier Khan’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to bolstering border security and maintaining a visible leadership presence in frontier regions.
During his time in Kaikan, Brigadier Khan met with Toshao Katiuska Rodrigues to address security concerns, explore opportunities for community development, and discuss the vital role the village plays in safeguarding the national border. The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and local residents in ensuring peace and stability.
The GDF received a warm welcome from the people of Kaikan, who expressed their appreciation for the Force’s unwavering commitment to the country’s territorial integrity. In a show of national pride and solidarity, the GDF led an initiative to install and distribute the Golden Arrowhead – Guyana’s national flag – throughout the community. The gesture served to strengthen the spirit of patriotism and unity among residents.
The visit was not only a strategic engagement but also a symbolic one, reaffirming to the residents—particularly the youth—that they are recognised, valued, and never forgotten. Brigadier Khan’s presence delivered a strong message of reassurance and support, reinforcing that all Guyanese, regardless of their location, are integral to the nation’s security and development.
This visit forms part of a wider outreach by the GDF to frontier areas, ensuring that these communities remain connected to the national fabric and protected from external threats.
