A construction accident at Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara, on Wednesday evening has left one man dead and seven others injured after a two-storey concrete structure collapsed during ongoing works.
Dead is 46-year-old carpenter Radish Domingo of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident occurred at approximately 19:10hrs while Domingo and several other workers were engaged in construction on the building. Reports indicate that the men were in the process of completing work on the roof when the structure suddenly gave way, trapping them beneath debris.
Emergency services, including ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Fire Service, were immediately summoned to the scene. Rescue efforts were quickly initiated, and the injured workers were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and Sheriff Medical Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Domingo was discovered pinned under the rubble. He was later extricated and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
His body was subsequently identified by a female relative and later transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Investigators have since noted the presence of CCTV cameras at the location, which are expected to be reviewed as part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Police investigations into the fatal incident are ongoing.
