Driver arrested days after Williamsburg hit-and-run accident

A driver was arrested nine days after a hit-and-run accident along the Williamsburg, Corentyne Public Road.

Mukesh Mathur, a 35-year-old resident of Clifton Settlement, Corentyne, was injured in the accident that occurred on April 11. Mathur was reportedly riding a motorcycle along the public road when a 35-year-old driver swerved into his path.

The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash. Mathur was quickly assisted by a concerned citizen, who took him to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured right arm and a fractured left leg. He was later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further care. His condition is stable.

On April 20, Police Officers reportedly acted on credible intelligence and located the driver at his Chesney, Berbice, residence. He did not deny his involvement in the accident and was later arrested and taken to the Rose Hall Town Police Station.

The vehicle, which the driver repaired himself by replacing both left-side doors and the wing mirror, was also seized.

Mathur remains hospitalised as the investigation continues.
