Firearms, ammo seized after East Coast operations

Police ranks seized firearms and ammunition in two separate operations conducted along the East Coast Demerara corridor on Sunday.

In one release, Police Headquarters said ammunition and a suspected air rifle were found on Sunday between 22:30hrs and 23:00hrs, during an intelligence-led operation conducted at Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara.

Enquiries revealed that ranks, acting on information received, went to the home of a 55-year-old farmer of Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, where he was contacted along with his 51-year-old woman. Searches were conducted on the premises, during which ranks found, concealed in a black bag in a drawer in a bedroom owned by the farmer’s 26-year-old son, six live 12-gauge cartridges, forty live 9mm rounds of ammunition, and one air rifle.

While further searches were being conducted, the 26-year-old son, along with his 23-year-old female, arrived at the location. The four persons were informed of the offence committed and were arrested.

They were escorted to the Cove and John Police Station along with the ammunition and air rifle, which were lodged pending investigation. The suspects remain in Police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.

In a second release, Police Headquarters noted that a firearm and ammunition were also found on Sunday, at about 18:30hrs, during an operation conducted at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

Enquiries revealed that ranks were in the vicinity of a business establishment on the Railway Embankment, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, when they observed a 19-year-old Venezuelan national of Sophia, East Coast Demerara, standing on the roadway with what appeared to be a bulky object in his pants waist.

As ranks approached, the suspect was seen removing a black object, which appeared to be a handgun, from his pants waist and throwing it to the ground beside him. The object was retrieved and found to be a suspected black 9mm pistol containing a magazine with eight live matching rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was asked if he was the holder of a firearm licence and reportedly stated that he was not. He was arrested and escorted to the Vigilance Police Station along with the suspected firearm and ammunition, which were lodged. The suspect remains in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
