A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Sunday evening following a collision with a motor lorry along the Williamsburg Public Road.
Dead is Haresh Gopilall of Lot 25 āDā Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to reports, the accident occurred at about 21:00 hrs and involved motor lorry GVV 5043, owned by an engineering company based in Timehri, East Bank Demerara, and driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.
Police said the lorry was proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a normal rate of speed, while Gopilall was riding motorcycle CR 1603 in the opposite direction with pillion rider Yedesh Singh, 27, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne.
Investigations revealed that as the motorcycle attempted to overtake, the driver of the lorry made a sudden right turn into its path, resulting in a collision in the southern drive lane.
Gopilall and Singh were thrown from the motorcycle and sustained injuries. They were assisted by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
Gopilall was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been taken to the Ramoo Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Singh was treated and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted with fractures to his left jaw and clavicle. His condition is listed as stable.
Both vehicles have been lodged at the Rose Hall Town Police Station pending examination.
Police said the lorry driver was subjected to two breathalyzer tests, which recorded readings of 31 and 32 micrograms.
He remains in custody as investigations continue.
