Rosignol man found guilty of sexual penetration of girl, 12

A welder from Rosignol, located in West Bank Berbice, was convicted by a jury on Monday after facing a serious charge of sexual penetration involving a minor.

37-year-old Robert Campbell stood before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Berbice High Court, maintaining his not guilty plea to the allegations. The charge states that on April 30, 2020, Campbell engaged in sexual act with a 12-year-old girl in Berbice.

Throughout the trial, state Prosecutor Marisa Edwards called eight witnesses, including a police officer and a medical expert, to share their insights and testimony.

When the trial concluded, the jury, composed of 12 members, carefully deliberated before returning a guilty verdict for Campbell.

Upon his conviction, Campbell’s bail was revoked, and he was taken into custody.

A sentencing hearing is set for May 6, during which several important documents will be reviewed, including a probation report, a victim impact statement, and a psychiatric evaluation.

Campbell is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Samantha Brown.
