Two arrested over 45lbs ganja find during West Coast Berbice operation

Two Berbice men are in police custody following the discovery of a significant quantity cannabis during a stop-and-search exercise along the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice, on Thursday afternoon.

The operation, carried out around 15:40hrs on April 23, led to the interception of a white Toyota Fielder wagon with two male occupants. Police ranks conducted searches on both individuals and the vehicle, uncovering four bulky parcels suspected to contain cannabis.

According to reports, the parcels—wrapped in transparent plastic and filled with leaves, seeds, and stems—were found concealed inside two multi-coloured shopping bags in the trunk of the car.

The driver, a 28-year-old resident of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, and his passenger, a 20-year-old labourer also from New Amsterdam, were immediately arrested.

Both suspects, along with the vehicle and the suspected narcotics, were escorted to the Weldaad Police Station. There, the substance was weighed in their presence and amounted to 45.4 pounds before being lodged as evidence.

The two men remain in custody as investigations into the matter continue.
