Man, 27, shot and arrested after allegedly opening fire on police during ECD operation

Police are investigating a shooting incident that unfolded Saturday night at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, during which a man was shot and later arrested after allegedly firing at ranks.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 21:00 hrs after police received information about a male reportedly walking in the area with a firearm.

Acting on the tip, ranks responded to the location where they encountered a 27-year-old man of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

Police said that upon seeing the officers, the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction. Ranks returned fire, prompting the suspect to flee south.

A chase ensued, with the man reportedly scaling several fences before being apprehended in a nearby yard.

A search conducted on him led to the discovery of a black .32 CZ firearm.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where the firearm was lodged and his hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue as part of ongoing investigations.

He was later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for treatment of a gunshot wound to his right leg. He remains hospitalised under police guard.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
