Matthews masterclass sets the tone for West Indies’ World Cup preparation

With the T20 World Cup looming large on the horizon, captain Hayley Matthews produced a statement performance to power West Indies to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Ireland in the opening match of the Tri-Nation series at Clontarf.

On a day where Ireland’s batting machinery stalled against a disciplined Caribbean attack, Matthews single-handedly reduced the 104-run chase into a routine stroll, blasting an unbeaten 82 off just 44 deliveries.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, West Indies immediately put the squeeze on Ireland’s top order.

The tournament serves as a final proving ground for both sides before the global showcase, but it was Ireland who looked stricken with pre-World Cup jitters.

Alana Dalzell fell to Zaida James in the second over without opening her account, and when Jahzara Claxton removed Rebecca Stokell shortly after, Ireland were sputtering at 23 for 3.

Orla Prendergast (25) and Leah Paul (21) offered a brief semblance of resistance, constructing a 44-run partnership that threatened to rebuild the innings.

However, the introduction of spin derailed any hopes of a competitive total. Left-arm orthodox Qiana Joseph was lethal in her short burst, ripping through the lower order to finish with stellar figures of 3 for 8 in two overs.

Once Prendergast was caught off Matthews’ own bowling for 25, the tail offered little resistance. Claxton returned to chip in with 2 for 9, while veteran spinner Afy Fletcher strangled the middle order.

Ireland lost their final seven wickets for just 36 runs, bundled out for a disappointing 103 in 17 overs.

Defending 103 against an explosive West Indian batting lineup required early wickets and absolute discipline from Ireland.

While Ava Canning did her part—striking twice early to dismiss the returning Deandra Dottin (3) and Qiana Joseph (6)—she found no support from the other end.

At 21 for 2, Ireland harboured a sliver of hope, but Matthews quickly snuffed it out.

The West Indies skipper operated on a different plane altogether. Punishing anything short and imperiously driving through the covers, Matthews struck 11 fours and 3 massive sixes.

She brought up a fiery half-century and refused to take her foot off the gas, accounting for nearly 80% of her team’s runs.

Partnering with the experienced Stafanie Taylor (10*), Matthews dismantled the Irish spin pairing of Cara Murray and Aimee Maguire.

The target was tracked down in just 11.3 overs, providing West Indies with a massive net run-rate boost and leaving Ireland with plenty of soul-searching to do before their upcoming fixtures against Pakistan.

West Indies face Pakistan on Friday from 11:00h.
